The robots are coming. This is what we keep hearing!

Some of the more drastic theories of loT technology and artificial intelligence talk about digital transformation smashing its way into our project management teams with robots taking over, leaving humans surplus to requirements.

While all this sounds rather futuristic, there is no need for panic.

Digital transformation is a welcome player in the PMO framework. And the truth is that artificial intelligence is already playing a part in our PMO activities. The real question is how do you make new technologies work for your business while extracting the most value?

Embracing digital transformation within PMO activities

Digital transformation has become a buzz word, bringing with it talk of smart machines and AI. This new landscape can seem scary if you are not familiar with the advantages these new technologies can bring. But once you learn how to adopt these tools you can embrace the new world order.

Our very own Solutions Manager, Ali Kaabi, agrees that digital transformation offers many exciting opportunities, “No doubt the disruption from smart machine, IoT, and AI will cause fundamental changes to how we conduct business, yet if adapted well the PMO could play a pivotal role enabling the organisation to create a competitive advantage by the strategic use of technology.”

Think of how the cloud has transformed the way we work and the way we store data. Cloud technology has created lower overhead costs, a reduced environmental impact and scalability like never before. This is a perfect example of how digital transformation can benefit us at work.

Other improvements that can come from embracing digital transformation include:

  • Improvements in communications - Chat tools such as Microsoft Teams offer real time communications and a great connection between teams. These tools also offer simplified remote working possibilities.
  • Faster document management - Being able to review, edit, and assess documents offers a huge boost for productivity and getting the right documentation out on time.
  • Agile project management - Gain clarity over deliverables, goals, and time management. AI can vastly improve the accuracy of information used within insights leading to improved processes.
  • Unlimited data possibilities - AI offers a chance to embrace larger volumes of data and interpret it clearly. As humans, we have limits on our data capabilities. This is where AI systems can really shine.
  • Opportunities for strategic work - Less time spent on automated tasks = more time for big-picture thinking and strategic planning

Adapting to modern work

AI and smart machines are not meant to replace the human element within project delivery. Rather we should look to leverage the extra capabilities of AI and smart technologies and embrace them to support the role and assist with PMO activities.

Essentially, the PMO can evolve to become the intermediary between “data’ and “actionable insights’ and assist senior decision makers to control the data into actionable information for strategy decisions.

The future successful PMOs will be the early adopters and innovators

Digital transformation can bring some unsettling times for how PMOs see themselves. However, you now have an exciting opportunity to be an early adopter and play a part in exciting new innovations.

Early adopters are best placed to be positioned as leaders in their field, and to create a gain over their competitors. If you can adapt to new ways of running projects, and embrace new technologies in a positive way, digital transformation will only improve PMO activities.
